How can captured CO₂ be transported?

In its gaseous state, CO₂ occupies a large volume. Compressing it significantly reduces its volume and makes it easier to transport through pipelines. The CO₂ is kept at specific pressure and temperature conditions to reach a state known as supercritical. In this state, it has the density of a liquid while retaining the viscosity of a gas, allowing it to flow more smoothly and consistently.

In Dunkirk, the DKHARBO project aims to develop CO₂ transport infrastructure across the industrial port area, enabling its reuse or export via an offshore pipeline. This pipeline would connect to the CO₂ Highway Europe project, which transports CO₂ to a storage site beneath the North Sea.
