Once captured, how is CO₂ transported and stored?

To be transported by specialised vessels, CO₂ must first be liquefied. By applying high pressure and cooling it, its volume can be significantly reduced, making it easier to transport.

The proposed liquefaction, storage and export terminal in Dunkirk would be located next to the LNG terminal at the western port, close to many local industrial sites and with direct access to the sea.

The stored CO₂ could then be loaded onto specialised vessels for shipment to geological storage sites beneath the North Sea, or reused.

The terminal is initially planned to handle 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. Additional capacity could be considered depending on future needs.
