Street art in Dunkirk: murals that are transforming the city
In the Dunkirk area, murals are becoming increasingly common in public spaces. They are intended to be a permanent feature of the public space, without being altered. These murals, which can be seen in several towns such as Petite-Synthe, Coudekerque-Branche, Quaëdypre and Bergues, bring urban spaces to life and create social ties.
In addition, in Dunkirk, walls for free expression are made available through the “Graff dans la Ville” scheme. There are five of them. These walls were set up to allow artists to express themselves legally and freely. The works created there are temporary.
In Petite-Synthe, a veritable urban art trail has been created, promoting local heritage and neighbourhood identity through colour and creativity. This initiative, which also involves local residents, helps to strengthen their sense of pride in belonging. Urban beautification through art is thus a key part of municipal policy to improve the living environment and attractiveness of the area.
