Coudekerque-Branche : Borax Française invests in battery technology to extend the lifespan of electric systems.

The local industry is making a strategic shift toward future technologies. In Coudekerque-Branche, Borax Français, a subsidiary of the mining group Rio Tinto and a longstanding presence in the region for over a century, has inaugurated a new production line dedicated to battery materials for electric vehicles and energy storage applications.

This development marks an important Milestone in the diversification of the site’s activities. Historically, the industrial facility has specialized in high-purity borates used in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and nuclear energy.

A €6 million investment in batteries

The company has invested approximately €6million in the development of a new production unit for ultra-high purity boric acid, designed for use un electric battery cathodes.

Two new boron-based products have been developed. Their purpose is to improve battery stability and extend battery lifespan by up to 20%, according to estimates provided by the company.

This innovation is part of a rapidly growing market, driven by the expansion of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

How does this technology improve battery performance ?

The compounds developed by Borax Français help improve energy retention and reduce battery performance degradation over repeated charge and discharge cycles.

Beyond the technical benefits, this innovation could also have a significant industrial impact. The company anticipates growth of between 30% and 60%, along with the creation of new jobs at its Coudekerque-Branche site.

What is Borax Français’ ambition for the future of batteries ?

Borax Français does not intend to stop there. The company is already working on the development of new molecules, including LiBOB, an additive designed to enhance the performance of next-generation battery electrolytes.

This projet reflects on the company’s commitment to securing a long-term position within the low-carbon technology value chain by supporting the energy transition through high-value-Added specialty materials.

A Strategic Industrial Site for the Region.

Etablished in Coudekerque-Branche since 1902, the plant is a major industrial player in the region. It demonstrates how long-established chemical industries can reivent themselves to meet the needs of emerging sectors, particularly electric mobility.
