DUNKIRK, A MAJOR INDUSTRIAL AND PORT TERRITORY

ALVANCE, ARCELORMITTALASTRAZENECABASF BEAULIEUEQIOMERAMETFERROGLOBESNFVERSALIS, … …they have all chosen Dunkirk as the place to develop and decarbonise their business activity.

The reason ? These companies benefits from the attractiveness of the Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk, the 3rd largest port in France with 53 MT of traffic (2019) and facilities that allow it to receive all kinds of goods and the very large ships. If the presence of these companies strengthens the local economy and employment, then the co-products from their processes, primarily CO2, can now become a resource.
In addition, the strong presence of industries in the Dunkirk basin also represents immediate commercial outlets for stakeholders in the hydrogen sector, which is set to develop, and for companies providing decarbonisation solutions.

Testimony :

“Dunkirk-Port is part of the pioneering ports combatting climate change. It is the first French port to offer dock-side electrification for container ships. We are aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050(…)” READ MORE

THE ATTRACTIVITY OF DUNKIRK PORT :

The Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk (GPMD) is an essential component in the local decarbonisation strategy and shows a strong commitment alongside the local authorities, particularly the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council. In its decarbonisation roadmap, Dunkirk-Port promotes the development of renewable energies and has, in this regard, identified unoccupied land that could become home to solar parks.

The leading multimodal port in France, the port of Dunkirk promotes decarbonising land transport and plans to install hydrogen stations within 3 to 5 years in the port area for hauliers to supply their truck fleets. Other measures in place include the development of dock-side power sockets, an LNG fuel offer as transitional energy (20% less GHG emissions than fuel oil) and even bio-LNG for ships.

Testimony :

“The coastline and the Dunkirk area make up France’s third industrial platform. The challenge around decarbonisation is therefore even greater. That’s why the CCI, local authorities, the Regional Council and the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) have pooled their resources to work together (…)” READ MORE

TWO KEY FIGURES :

  • 460 : industrial companies representing 24% of the employees are on the Dunkirk territory.
  • 19% : The CO2 and H2 Hub roll-out in Dunkirk will help to reduce national industrial emission by 19% by 2050.
