Dunkerque and its port – French excellence in Osaka
The Osaka World Expo, which will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025, will bring nations together under the theme “Designing Future Societies for Our Lives”, aiming to address major global challenges and solutions for a sustainable future.
Dunkerque and its port have been chosen to represent French excellence during the thematic fortnight of the France Pavilion titled “Sustainable City and Port”, from May 16 to May 31, 2025. With a coalition of local stakeholders (Dunkerque Urban Community, Dunkerque-Port, ÉcosystèmeD, the Office of Tourism and Conventions and EDF), the Dunkerque region will exhibit from May 16 to 18, 2025, within a dedicated space under the brand “Spirit of Dunkerque”.

Designated by the World Economic Forum as one of the 20 cities capable of “saving the world”
From May 16 to 18, 2025, Dunkirk will present a series of conferences and meetings based on the “Dunkirk Model”. For three days, visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the major transformation that has taken place in the region over the last ten years. Whether in terms of our industrial models, everyday mobility, or our urban and social approach, Dunkirk is today a model of innovation, for the benefit of all.
Come and listen to our local and international experts, share Dunkirk’s decarbonization strategy, its economic development, its urban transformation and its rich heritage. These exchanges will provide the public with a comprehensive overview of the region’s ambitions and successes.

An attractive region
Dunkirk, a city of history and culture, bears the marks of its turbulent past and its ability to renew itself. The scene of Operation Dynamo in 1940, highlighted by Christopher Nolan in his film ‘Dunkirk’, it has a rich heritage, with its UNESCO-listed belfries and fortifications built by Vauban.
This heritage combines with a committed modernity, where nature and urban development coexist harmoniously. A pioneer in sustainable mobility, the city also preserves a remarkable environment. Its vast beaches, dunes and protected natural areas provide an ideal setting for outdoor pursuits such as sand yachting and long-distance sailing, while benefiting from rigorous ecological management.
Its maritime identity shapes both its festive traditions and its gastronomy, inspired by Flemish flavours. Between memory and innovation, Dunkerque embodies authentic, sustainable tourism that looks to the future.
