WASTE HEAT IS WORTH THE COST

Many production and transformation processes involve the production of thermal energy that is not used in full. This is called “waste heat”.

It can be used internally to meet the needs of certain companies but it can also be sold to be recovered externally using the heat network. A chance to improve its balance sheet could be really beneficial for a company.

Urban heat network

  • Dunkirk’s urban heat network, which has been powered by the calories from ArcelorMittal’s blast furnaces since 1986.
  • Grande-Synthe’s urban heat network, which enables the production of heat from blast furnace gases (which were previously flared).

Heat superhighway

  • A “heat superhighway” connecting industrialists and logistics providers in the industrial-port area is planned for 2025.
  • Potentially spanning 30 km, it will collect, transport, transform and use waste heat, avoiding the emission of 60 kT of CO2 per year.

Still in development thanks to the support of new industrialists, it will soon help us to heat more facilities and housing units (another 12,000 will soon be added to the current 16,000)!

NEED FUNDING?

The “Fonds Chaleur” or Heat Fund managed by the ADEME (French Agency for Ecological Transition) is an advice and financial arrangement aiming to develop renewable heat production.

The funding can go towards projects in the following areas: 

  • Thermal solar, geothermal energy
  • Biomass energy recovery
  • Recovered energy and, of course, the heat network.

EURAÉNERGIE

Euraénergie is one of the organisations supporting the Dunkirk territory’s industrial transformation towards decarbonisation.

One of its aims is to build an energy transition ecosystem on the Dunkirk industrial-port platform which benefits from the many recoverable co-products, particularly the 5,400 GWh of waste heat.

It is supported by local public stakeholders including the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council, the AGUR (Flanders-Dunkirk area urban planning and development agency), Pôlénergie, Ecopal and our agency Dunkerque Promotion. And also the Littoral Hauts-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk, the University Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO) and the IMT Lille Douai Engineering School.

ECOPAL

Ecopal supports companies as they put their circular economy and industrial ecology initiatives into action.

Their team offers a wide range of comprehensive services:  

  • An inventory of incoming and outgoing flows: materials, water and energy
  • Waste diagnosis: waste identification and recommendations
  • Data streams: indexing, resource knowledge, synergy research
  • “Barter” system: donation or search for products

ECO-TECH CERAM

Eco-Tech Ceram, a thermal engineering company, can support industrialists with their waste heat recovery, thereby reducing their carbon footprint.

This start-up set up a high temperature thermal storage demonstrator on the ArcelorMittal Dunkerque site. It allows it to capture, store and recover the heat lost as decarbonised energy. Named Eco-Stock, the demonstrator should enable the steelmaker to stop consuming fossil fuels to dry its sludge and avoid the additional cost of transporting the wet sludge. It is an opportunity to make some savings and reduce carbon emissions.

TERRAO

Terrao uses technology to eliminate pollution. It provides three types of solution:

– TerraoTherm, an air recycling solution  

– TerraoSave, a solution that combats industrial waste pollution in the atmosphere 

– TerraoPur, which fights for clean air in public spaces. This solution provides purified air, which has been disinfected and decontaminated at the right temperature in public areas.
