Claire, the globetrotter, has settled down in Dunkirk !

Claire Delannoy, globetrotter, I grew up in Africa, studied in Metropolitan France, started my professional career in Guadeloupe, then married a man from Dunkirk! It’s important to point this out, because a man from Dunkirk always returns to his port… even 20 years later. Together, we returned to Africa, then to Luxembourg and New Caledonia before coming back to France in the summer of 2024. Nouméa to Dunkirk, without transition! Welcome to the North!

What image did you have of Dunkirk before you arrived?

I have been coming to Dunkirk since I met my husband 15 years ago. I have always loved the region for its location and its carnival. We lived abroad for 10 years, but we would come back every winter to take part in this crazy event and dance to the rhythm of the music.

I remember my first ball… I was amazed by so many colours, so much madness, beauty and kindness too. The carnival, its balls and its bands are a source of strong emotions and good humour… And what a bond there is between carnival-goers.

Oh yes! You’ll never get bored in Dunkirk! Between neighbourhood parties, festivals, major events, walks… There’s always something to do!

Living in Malo, I appreciate being able to do everything on foot, by bicycle or by scooter.

I am also fortunate to live near the beach and to be able to enjoy two lifestyles: on the one hand, city life with all the amenities nearby, and on the other, life in the open air, just a stone’s throw from the beach.

We have a very pleasant quality of life in Dunkirk. My children, aged 11 and 14, are independent and can travel to school on their own using the free bus service. Throughout the summer, they were able to enjoy numerous activities organised by the local authority.

As parents, Dunkirk offers us peace of mind and a great deal of freedom for our teenagers.

I discovered the Flanders Dunes by bike during a family outing between Malo and La Panne. I loved this trip… The cycle path is really very pleasant.
For me, the events programme is a huge asset for the city! There is always something to do, something to discover! And all of this by the water, surrounded by nature or in unusual settings.

Would you recommend the region to other employees or families who are considering moving here?

First, I would invite them to discover the region with an open mind… The locals are warm and welcoming, the food is delicious, there is a rich community life and sporting activities on every street corner.

The only downside… it’s 5 degrees too cold, but no city is perfect.
