DUNKIRK, KEY EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURES

  • As a large Northern European port, Dunkirk- Port has excellent harbour accessibility. Its facilities are such that it can receive all kinds of goods and large ships. The port of Dunkirk provides industrialists and shippers with efficient and combined high volume transport services which play a part in improving their carbon footprint.
  • Dunkirk has a dense and high-performing rail network for passenger transport (high-speed train station, Channel Tunnel)
    and the transport of goods.
  • The high clearance canal provides room for 3,000 T barges to sail and grants access to the northern European river network. The opening of the Seine–Nord Europe Canal will extend the river hinterland to the Picardy and Paris regions.
  • Dunkirk provides direct and seamless access to Europe’s road network from north to south via the A25 motorway and from east to west via the A16 and A26 motorways.

3 KEY FIGURES :

  • 1st French rail freight hub.
  • 1st river port in the Hauts-de-France.
  • 8700 km : the total length of French operator RTE high-voltage electricity transmission network in the Hauts-de-France.

AIR LIQUIDE, A HISTORIC PLAYER IN THE DUNKERQUE TERRITORY

Air Liquide is a long-standing stakeholder in the Dunkirk industrial basin. Based in the territory since 1962, the Group has evolved according to the needs of the industrialists in the Nord Region: chemistry, refining, the steel industry, etc. Perfectly integrated into the heart of the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council, Air Liquide
has been supporting local stakeholders for more than 60 years, particularly by rolling out energy efficiency and decarbonisation solutions. Some inland customers can also be provided with hydrogen using a network supplied from Belgium. The Dunkirk site is now a major Air Liquide Group site in Europe for gas production and distribution.

DUNKIRK, EXISTING QUALITY NETWORKS

  • The Dunkirk basin’s electricity transmission network is very dense given its electro-intensive companies and important production sites. The network supplies the Hauts-de-France region with electricity (6 million inhabitants) and powers regular exchanges with our European neighbours, particularly Great Britain and Belgium.
  • Since 1986, Dunkirk has had the largest urban heating network in France, powered by an industrial waste heat recovery system. Still under development due to the contribution of new industrialists, it measures more than 40 km and prevents the emission of 20,000 tonnes of CO2/year.
  • Dunkirk is a major gas import point in France. On one hand, it has the coastal landing terminal for one of the largest underwater gas pipelines in the world (Gassco). And on the other hand, it has Dunkirk LNG, Europe’s 2nd largest LNG terminal (600,000 m3 storage capacity for LNG at – 162°C). The gas pipe network is thus highly developed.
  • Dunkirk has an industrial water network (22 million m3 used on average/year).

With numerous infrastructures and networks already in place and a political commitment to making the region a pioneer in the field of hydrogen, the Dunkirk urban area is ready for the massive production of hydrogen in the years to come
