An essential territory in the Transition

DID YOU KNOW?

Urban areas are home to 75% of the European Union’s citizens and consume more than 65% of the world energy supply. They also represent more than 70% of CO2 emissions!

That’s why it’s essential for towns to act as experience and innovation ecosystems. For several years now, the towns in the Dunkirk region have been joining forces in showing the way ahead so we can reach climate neutrality by 2050.

DUNKIRK AT THE HEART OF FRANCE’S CLIMATE TARGETS

  • The industrial sector represents 20% of greenhouse gases in Europe.
  • Dunkirk alone represents 21% of France’s industrial emissions (2020 report) having emitted 13.7 million tonnes of CO2 in 2020.
  • The territory of Dunkirk is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2050 and has implemented a number of specific actions in partnership with local businesses.

Dunkirk is aiming to become France’s model of a decarbonised industry.

Along with 100 other towns in Europe, the European Commission has selected Dunkirk as a territory aiming for carbon neutrality. The target for our territory: to become climate neutral and smart by 2030.

There are many initiatives and projects under way:

  • Geothermal energy development with numerous pilot sites (Collège Gaspard Malo, Château Coquelles, etc), climate neutrality support and awareness operations in domains such as energy, buildings, waste management and transport, including the free bus, in particular.
  • Dunkirk has also worked to set up a H2 and CO2 hub

REV3 MISSION – HAUTS-DE-FRANCE TRANSFORMATION

The Hauts-de-France region leads the Third Industrial Revolution (Rev3).
• Rev3 is a dynamic initiative designed to transform the region into one of the most advanced in Europe in terms of the energy transition and digital technologies.
• The Hauts-de-France region boasts a roadmap and action plan for the development of the hydrogen sector, particularly for transport, buildings and industry – the three key cornerstones of the Hauts-de-France economy.
• An acclaimed Rev3 demonstrator territory, the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council (CUD) is also one of the most advanced in terms of the energy transition in France and in Europe. Committed to combating air pollution and lowering CO2 emissions for many years now, the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council is one of the few authorities to be awarded the Cit’ergies Gold® label by Ademe (French Agency for Ecological Transition) since 2013.
• The Hauts de Flandre Greater District Council (CCHF) is a more rural territory which has very quickly become committed to the energy and ecological transition. In 2018, the Hauts-de-France region promoted it to REV3 demonstrator territory and it has remained as such ever since. Its role includes facilitating methanisation projects carried out by local farmers and it is behind the launch of the local flax centre of excellence.

DUNKIRK: A SUSTAINABLE PORT

For many years now, the Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk (GPMD) has been taking action to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and lower the impact that port activities have on the environment through:

  • The production of a Management and Sustainable Development Plan for the port area (PA2D).
  • Natural area and species protection management. The Grand Port Maritime of Dunkirk has integrated efforts for the protection and enhancement of habitats.
  • The modal shift towards non-road transport is over 50% in the port area.
  • Solar park facilities (40 MW currently planned).
  • The reclassification of port sites as solar parks (40 MW currently planned).
  • Support for the construction and running of the future heat recovery network in the industrial-port area.
  • Cold ironing which allows container ships in port to shut down their auxiliary engines.
  • LNG ship bunkering to complement the LNG tanker loading station. The container terminal has received the “LNG Ready Terminal” accreditation.
