A VARIETY OF LOW CARBON ENERGY SOURCES

The most important nuclear power plant in Europe.

Gravelines nuclear power plant produced 32.6 TWh of low carbon electricity in 2020, the equivalent of the needs of 7 million homes in France.

The roll-out of green hydrogen

Necessary for the decarbonisation of industrial processes, Dunkirk is working to set up a green hydrogen hub producing 150 KT of H2 per year. H2V59 and Shymed are part of the ongoing projects.

 

A solar power plant

Dunkirk Port will install the first solar power plant with a 40 MW capacity.  

An offshore wind farm

The future offshore wind farm planned off the coast of Dunkirk will offer a 600 MW capacity by 2027.

A RELIABLE, UNINTERRUPTED NETWORK

Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), the operator of the French electricity transmission network, manages electricity flows and the balance between production and consumption in France.

One of France’s major strengths is the quality of its electricity supply, associated with great stability:  

  • 9% – this is the percentage of power supply continuity on the RTE network. This means that network outages are extremely rare.  
  • RTE is one of the few European electricity transmission network operators to make a contractual commitment to the quality of the power supply at all times and the continuity of its customers’ electricity supply.

More than 4,000 of RTE’s employees are ready to tackle breakdowns and make repairs 24/7.

Very significant investments are expected to be made by RTE in the Hauts-de-France and Dunkirk areas to support their customers with their projects, particularly decarbonisation ones.

  • Almost 500 million euros between 2023 and 2025.

Heat superhighway

A waste heat deposit of 5,400 GWh has been identified in the territory. 635 GWh will be recovered thanks to the heat superhighway soon to be deployed.

Urban heat network

Dunkirk benefits from a network that recovers the waste heat produced by the ArcelorMittal site. This network is over 50 km long and avoids 20K tonnes of CO2 per year. Furthermore, in Wormhout, the Hauts de Flandre Greater District Council (CCHF) heat network powered by flax shives heats the Linéo aquatic centre.

Green H2 production – H2V59

The H2V59 hydrogen production site in Loon-Plage is going to produce almost 28,000 tonnes of green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water. This represents almost 3% of French production. The factory is due to be commissioned in 2028.

Energy storage in batteries

At the end of 2021, TotalEnergie commissioned its battery electricity storage site in the industrial-port area comprising 27 containers of 2.5 MWh. It is currently “France’s most powerful battery”.

Industrial water network

The Dunkirk area is one of the few territories to have an industrial water network to power its industries (22 million m3 per year). As the protection of water resources is a burning issue for the coming decades, the territory’s stakeholders are studying the synergies to be put in place to develop the circular water economy.

Coproduct deposits

The territory will eventually recover numerous deposits of coproducts from industrial activities. The Toile IndustrielleÒ (industrial decision-making tool) and themed decision making tools put in place by the AGUR (French town planning agency) help to visualise the recovery opportunities and possible synergies: a device unique to France!
