Criteria for allocating social housing

The allocation of social housing is subject to precise criteria, defined by the law. Social housing landlords take into account income, the household composition, as well as the professional and family status of the applicants.

The main criterion is that you must not exceed a certain income ceiling. Contrary to popular belief, these ceilings are relatively high since more than 70% of the population is eligible for it.

To be eligible for social housing, you must be a French citizen or hold a valid residence permit, have an income corresponding to the accommodation you would like and not own your own home.

It is also possible to have housing allocated as a priority in an urgent case.

Allocating social housing

One of the characteristics of social housing is that a tenant cannot directly sign a lease with an organisation for the property of their choice. They must complete a form and apply online with the dedicated service: make an application for social housing.

Social housing is allocated after the applicant’s complete form has been reviewed by the allocation committee. The committee makes a fair review of all the forms from the candidates put forward for the available housing (three candidates per housing unit).

The advantages of social housing

Social housing has a number of advantages for tenants. In fact, rents are capped, thereby enabling people to access accommodation in line with their income and circumstances. Furthermore, social housing landlords must adhere to housing construction and renovation quality standards, guaranteeing a level of comfort and safety for tenants.

Tenants of social housing can also get certain financial housing aid such as APL (Personal Housing Benefit) or ALS (Social Housing Benefit) which aim to reduce the cost of rent.

Buying from a social housing landlord guarantees your purchase is secure in the event of a life incident. Thanks to the special schemes offered by social housing landlords – security, affordable prices – many households are able to become home owners every year.
