DUNKIRK, CREATIVE ENERGY: A TERRITORY TRANSFORMATION PROJECT
In 2019, the Dunkirk territory was a candidate for the “Innovative Territory” call for expression of interest launched by the government. And it had some ambitious objectives:
- To spearhead the competitive and sustainable industry of tomorrow,
- To improve the quality of life of inhabitants by protecting the environment.
The name of the project is “Dunkirk, Creative Energy” selected by the French State and awarded 37.5 million euros. A key strategic project that kickstarted the territory’s transformation and transition movement.
MAKING DUNKIRK THE LEADING H2 AND CO2 HUB IN FRANCE
For some years now, public and private partners in the Dunkirk basin have been working to decarbonise the territory. Whether it’s industry, homes or transport, Dunkirk is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2050. Today, the achievements are visible and the projects numerous with the goal of making Dunkirk’s industrial and port platform the leading CO2 and H2 hub in France.

MAKING FLAX, A COMPLETELY LOCAL DEVELOPMENT SECTOR
A local and sustainable natural fibre, the flax sector is seeing significant growth. The region is ranked second in France for flax production. The territory is home to 12 flax businesses or scutching activities, so the Hauts-de-Flandre Greater District Council (CCHF) has launched the Flax Centre of Excellence to foster innovations in this sector.
ENVISAGE THE PROPERTY OF TOMORROW
- Le Grand Bleu, a rare housing project with a sea view overlooking the marina: 28 dual aspect apartments with one to three bedrooms and a garage.
- La Marina, a new seaside neighbourhood in the extension of the Malo-les-Bains embankment, including apartments and water sport and leisure activities in a landscaped setting.
- Maloë, around one hundred apartments in a range of sizes with large windows, balconies, terraces and landscaped gardens.
- Le Clos des Remparts: rare houses and apartments located in the fortified town of Bergues, with a charging port for hybrid vehicles, a bike shed and shops nearby.
- Bô Bourg, a residence at the heart of Dunkirk’s marina combining 43 apartments and 12 houses.
- Belle Escale, luxury apartments with a balcony or loggia ideally located between Dunkirk city centre and the seaside resort of Malo-les-Bains.
SOLIDARITY LIES AT THE HEART OF OUR PROJECTS
- The Fondation Dunkerquois solidaires pour l’emploi (Dunkirk Employment Solidarity Foundation) helps people out of work to find a job. By collecting tax-free donations, the community creates socially useful jobs within associations that have signed agreements with the Foundation.
- So that funding and getting a driving licence no longer stand in the way of hiring young people, Entreprendre Ensemble and the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council launched the 1 Driving Licence, 1 Job programme in 2018.
- To make life easier for project leaders and encourage business creation, La Turbine brings all the useful organisations working to support business creation together in the same place.
- Dunkirk has been awarded the Destination for All certification (Gold category). This is real recognition for the initiatives taken for the inclusion of disabled people.
- The famous Dunkirk Carnival is a festival but it is also an opportunity for many philanthropic carnival associations to raise large sums of money for charity.
