Total, the world’s second largest private LNG player with operations in more than 130 countries, is continuing to pursue its ambitions to become the major player in responsible energy. This time, in collaboration with DUNKIRK LNG SAS, THE DUNKIRK LNG TERMINAL, Total has carried out its first marine LNG bunkering of a container ship in France at the PORT OF DUNKERQUE.
An unprecedented achievement:
The Gas Agility, the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel chartered by Total, completed the bunkering of the world’s largest LNG-powered container ship, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, with approximately 16,400 m3 of LNG at the PORT OF DUNKIRK on 30 of April. This was the first operation of its kind in France and was successfully completed.
Dunkerque LNG‘s teams demonstrated that the new small ship loading service was operational. The Gas Agility, chartered by Total Marine Fuels and equipped by MOL, loaded a cargo of LNG safely and efficiently. After loading LNG at the terminal, the Gas Agility sailed to the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé, the first of a series of nine LNG-powered 23,000 TEU container ships ordered by CMA CGM, for bunkering at the FLANDERS TERMINAL. This double operation, the first of its kind in France, marks a key stage in the commitment of Dunkerque LNG and its partners to the ENERGY TRANSITION.
Initially designed to accommodate conventional LNG tankers, from 65,000 m3 to 267,000 m3, the LNG terminal jetty was adapted in June 2020 to offer a new service: the loading of bunker ships and small LNG tankers (from 5,000 m3). Bunkers are used to supply LNG-powered commercial vessels such as cargo ships or cruise ships.
The development of the jetty is part of the Green Loop project, co-financed by the European Union and in which Dunkerque LNG is a partner alongside Total Marine Fuels, MOL and CMA CGM, a world leader in maritime transport and logistics. One of the aims of this project is to set up an LNG SUPPLY CHAIN in the port of Dunkirk from the LNG terminal.
The Dunkirk LNG terminal is a reference infrastructure in Northern Europe and is developing a complete LNG supply chain in cooperation with the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque.
LNG as a marine fuel:
LNG as a marine fuel has created a positive momentum at a time when the global shipping industry is seeking to adapt to stricter emissions standards.
Compared to ships currently powered by fuel oil, the use of marine LNG offers a reduction of :
99% reduction in sulphur oxide emissions
99% reduction in fine particle emissions;
Up to 85% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions;
Up to 23% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (Well-to-Wake)1
Marine LNG also paves the way for the future introduction of an even cleaner marine fuel, bio-LNG.
Dunkirk LNG:
The Dunkirk LNG terminal has an annual regasification capacity of 13 billion m3. It is the second largest LNG terminal in continental Europe and the only one connected to two markets, France and Belgium.
