from ArcelorMittal&#8217;s blast furnaces since 1986.<\/li>\n<li>Grande-Synthe&#8217;s urban heat network, which enables the production of heat from blast furnace gases (which were previously and logistics providers in the industrial-port area is planned for 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Potentially spanning 30 km, it will collect, transport, transform and use waste heat, avoiding the emission of 60 kT class=\"c-plus__head\"><p>What is a district heating network?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__content\"><p>A district heating network is a system that heats several buildings by distributing locally produced heat, often from renewable or recovered energy sources.<\/p>\n<p>It consists of three main components:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A heat production unit, which generates the heat used in the network.<\/li>\n<li>A network of pipes, which transports a hot fluid (often water) from the production unit to the buildings, then returns the cooled fluid to be reheated.<\/li>\n<li>Substations, located in each building, which transfer the heat to the building&#8217;s internal heating system, while measuring the amount of energy used.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Heat networks are mainly developed in urban areas, as they are only cost-effective when there are many buildings close to each other with significant heating requirements. This is also known as district heating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__head\"><p>What energies power this network?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__content\"><p>In 2023, 66.5% of district heating networks were powered by renewable and recovered energy. The main sources are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Heat recovered from household waste incineration<\/strong> (29%), produced at sites called energy recovery units.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biomass<\/strong> (25.5%), mainly wood, but also agricultural residues and organic waste.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geothermal energy<\/strong> (5.5%), which uses heat from the subsoil, sometimes at great depths (over 200 metres). Heating networks make it possible to harness this energy source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite this significant share of renewable energies, networks still use gas (35.5% in 2021), mainly as a supplement during peak consumption periods or when renewable sources are insufficient. This share is gradually decreasing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__head\"><p>Who should I contact for support?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__content\"><p>Before connecting to a district heating network, it is important to insulate your home to avoid oversizing the heating system.<\/p>\n<p>Two services can assist you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>France R\u00e9nov\u2019<\/strong>: free advice on renovation, financial assistance, RGE-certified tradespeople, and personalised support.<\/li>\n<li><strong>France Chaleur Urbaine<\/strong>: allows you to check if there is a network near you and contact the operator for a quote.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only network operators can carry out a feasibility study and offer a connection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__head\"><p>Financial assistance<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__content\"><p>Connecting to a district heating network may entitle you to several financial incentives, particularly if the building is replacing a polluting heating system or undergoing comprehensive energy renovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Heating for residential and commercial buildings\u2019 subsidy:<\/p>\n<p>Subsidy for replacing coal, oil or gas heating with a connection to a district heating network that mainly uses renewable energy:<\/p>\n<p>Reserved for buildings over 2 years old.<\/p>\n<p>The amount varies depending on the operator, so it is advisable to compare several offers.<\/p>\n<p>Grant valid for quotes signed until 31 December 2025.<br \/>\n\ud83d\udca1 Simulator available on France Chaleur Urbaines<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/france-chaleur-urbaine.beta.gouv.fr\/reseaux-chaleur#contenu\">Click here to find out about all the grants available.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__head\"><p>The parties responsible for the networks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-plus__content\"><p>Heating networks are mainly created and managed by local authorities (municipalities, inter-municipal authorities), which provide a public district heating service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who manages these networks?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The local authority remains responsible for the service, even if it often delegates management to <strong>private operators<\/strong> (such as Engie, Dalkia, Idex, Coriance, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>These operators are responsible for day-to-day operations, under the supervision of the local authority, which ensures compliance with tariffs and the share of renewable energy.<\/li>\n<li>Some networks are managed directly by the local authority (under public control), if it has the necessary resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Where can I find out more?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With so many different players involved, it can be difficult to know who to contact for a connection. It allows it to capture, store and recover the heat lost as decarbonised energy. Named <strong>Eco-Stock<\/strong>, the demonstrator should enable the steelmaker to stop consuming fossil fuels to dry its sludge and avoid the additional cost of transporting the wet sludge.
