ARCELORMITTAL is indeed showing great ambitions in terms of reducing its CO2 emissions. A GREEN HAUT-FOURNEAU INDUSTRIAL PILOT, BAPTIZED IGAR, will ultimately reduce CO2 emissions by 17%. The reuse of iron and steel gases and their transformation into reducing synthetic gas based on carbon monoxide and hydrogen, will be reinjected into the blast furnace and will replace fossil fuels.
At the same time, the steelmaker launched an industrial demonstrator for CO2 capture and storage, THE 3D PROJECT, which should, from 2021, capture 500 kg of CO2 per hour in steel gases, thanks to the integration of highly technological technologies. innovative technologies that reduce the costs of capturing and purifying CO2 from residual gases. Finally, ArcelorMittal’s Dunkirk site hopes to be able to reduce its CO2 emissions by an additional 8% by incorporating twice as much recycled steel in its production and up to two million tonnes per year. These three projects aim at a 33% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

“The volume of this investment (€30 billion, Editor’s note) is consistent with the objectives that
we have set ourselves for the reduction of carbon emissions by 2030 (-50%, Editor’s note) […]. Of the €1.2 billion, a first package of 200 million euros will be released between now and the end of the year to stimulate decarbonisation-related investment. And coming here, to ArcelorMittal Dunkerque, a company that has taken a step in this direction, is highly symbolic. This should bring momentum to the Dunkirk territory, an area destined to become a pioneer in these endeavours.”
